The QHotels Collection has enhanced its position at the forefront of professional golf in the UK after heralding a summer of golf by hosting a number of prestigious industry tournaments.
In an action-packed few months, Slaley Hall Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort – one of seven golf resorts in The QHotels Collection – was given the honour of hosting the first-ever Asian Tour event in the UK, the International Series England.
In addition, the top Northumberland venue staged the PGA’s flagship event, the PGA Professional Championship, earlier this month, while Telford Hotel & Golf Resort was chosen to host the Ignis Sports Management Championship on the PGA EuroPro Tour.
Taking place from June 2-5, the International Series England event not only featured the Asian Tour’s best players but also the likes of former US Open champions Graeme McDowell and Michael Campbell as they took on the challenge of Slaley Hall’s impressive Hunting Course.
Regarded by many as “The Augusta of the North”, the 7,000-yard-plus layout, complete with lush sweeping fairways, streams and banks of rhododendrons, provided a unique playing experience for the elite line-up, with Zimbabwean Scott Vincent eventually emerging victorious with a winning score of 12-under-par.
Two weeks after the Asian Tour event, a collection of the UK’s top up-and-coming players gathered at Slaley Hall for the PGA Professional Championship, with Matthew Cort taking top honours following a play-off victory over Daniel Whitby-Smith.
Victory on the Hunting Course meant Cort completed a rare double, having won both the PGA Assistants’ Championship and the PGA Professional Championship, as he beat Whitby-Smith in an elimination play-off that also qualified him for the 2022 Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team.
Elsewhere in The QHotels Collection, Telford Hotel & Golf Resort hosted The Ignis Sports Management Championship. The event was won by Englishman Josh Hilleard, who beat off close competition from compatriots David Langley and Nick Marsh at the stunning Shropshire course.
Slaley Hall, which has played host to 18 European Tour and European Senior Tour event, will soon have further reason to celebrate when the PGA EuroPro Tour return for The QHotels Collection Championship – its third major event of the summer. Players will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Jamie Rutherford, who claimed a thrilling victory on the Hunting Course last year.
Keith Pickard, The QHotels Collection’s golf, health club and spa director, said: “It has been an action-packed few months here at The QHotels Collection but we are delighted with how the events have gone. It has been a pleasure to host some of the best golfers from across the globe at our venues, adding another few chapters to the already prestigious history our courses have.
“We are very much looking forward to hosting the PGA EuroPro Tour’s QHotels Collection Championship next month at Slaley Hall and welcoming those taking part for in what will be yet another high-class golf event.”
