The R&A understands that nurturing talent from the grassroots level requires age-appropriate equipment, quality training methods and good training facilities, particularly in developing regions where golf is not traditionally played. To this end, The R&A have partnered with Mizuno and GolfWay and collaborated with the Uganda Golf Union, to donate appropriate equipment to the AFRIYEA Golf Academy and its programmes.
The bulk of this equipment is light weight and durable specifically designed to be age-appropriate and easy to handle to help young players develop basic skills. It is also safe for training children and introducing them to the game in schools, parks, community centres and other areas where space is limited.
Kevin Barker, Director of Golf Development for The R&A commented, “The R&A are pleased to be able to support the Uganda Golf Union and the Afriyea Golf Academy in their efforts to foster and grow the game of golf across the country. The donation of this equipment represents our ongoing dedication to supporting the work being done by the Uganda Golf Union as they partner with the Afriyea Academy in the development of the game in the region. We are confident that this contribution will help inspire and equip the next generation of golfers in Uganda, paving the way for future success both on and off the course.”
The AFRIYEA Golf Academy, founded by Isaiah Mwesige, is a junior golf development programme with a focus on equally promoting golf, life skills, and sustainability within Ugandan schools and communities.
Dr.Jackson Were, The President of Uganda Golf Union, as an inclusive organization, the Uganda Golf Union is committed to working closely with golf clubs, affiliate associations, academies, and schools to cultivate a vibrant golfing community in Uganda. We believe that this donation to AFRIYEA Golf Academy will significantly enhance access to the sport for junior players, fostering the next generation of golfers.”
Nick Horrocks, The director of Programs at Golf way said “We are proud to play a part in ensuring that children within the AFRIYEA Golf Academy have access to the correct equipment to support the development of their golf skills and techniques.”
“The contribution of this equipment by The R&A and the Uganda Golf Union is a tremendous boost to our youth programmes, and we are very grateful” said Mwesige. “Our juniors have made significant progress over the past few years, and it is our goal to see some of them participate in the Africa Amateur Championship, a new annual initiative by The R&A aimed at further growing the game in Africa.”
He continued, “Ugandan golfers are starting to see success on the global stage through these programmes, both in prestigious professional and amateur tournaments. Ronald Rugumayo became the first Ugandan to make the cut at a DP World Tour event – the Magical Kenya Open this year – and Godfrey Nsubuga was the first Ugandan golfer to qualify for the 2024 US Amateur. These accomplishments will have a positive impact on what is considered possible for Ugandan golfers to achieve in the future.”
